World Renewable Energy 2009

February 15, 2010

Wind energy grew by 30% last year, with the most growth happening in China, which doubled its wind energy capacity.

The U.S. increased its wind energy by 39%, despite predictions that investment in renewable energy would slow in 2009.

Steve Sawyer, the Global Wind Energy Council Secretary General, said that the 158 GW of wind energy installed last year kept 204 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, and will continue to reduce emissions every year. That’s a lot of CO2, until you consider the estimated world emissions for 2009, 41,755 million tones of CO2.

There’s still a lot to be done to reduce our gas emissions from burning fossil fuels, but it’s great to see numbers like these coming from the wind energy sector. We are working on it, no one can “predict” that away!
